Statement of Research Achievment

Dr Andrew Bisits is an academic obstetrician with training in epidemiology and biostatistics. He has been involved in a wide range of research projects to which he has made major contributions particularly in the area of study design and data analysis. An important aspect of his work has been in the area of preterm delivery. He was a significant contributor to the design, conduct and analysis of the Randomised Trial Of Transdermal Nitrates versus ? sympathomimetics, which our group has recently completed. Dr Bisits was a chief investigator in this NHMRC multicentre trial. This trial produced a number of key findings that have been published. Dr Bisits has subsequently provided much of the design input for our current NHMRC trial comparing nifedipine alone versus nifedipine plus refocoxib (Cox2 inhibitor) in preterm labour. This trial will use a multicentre, group sequential design not previously used in trial of therapy for preterm labour. Andrew is involved in many other research projects undertaken by members of the program. He provided the data analysis of the maternal plasma CRH concentrations that lead to the identification of the placental biological clock that is thought to determine gestational length in the human. He also undertook the data analysis of fetal fibronectin results that confirmed the strong negative predictive value of this test and the cost savings associated with its clinical use. He has undertaken the design and analysis of data on urine metalloprotease testing for the prediction of preterm delivery. Andrew is the major statical and epidemiological consultant for the Mothers and Babies Research Centre. He is currently undertaking Causal Modeling approaches to the analysis of data from epidemiological and more basic biological studies performed by group members.
