Interests
Professor Symonds has a wide range of research interests in reproductive health. He has been principle investigator on projects on the detection of intrapartum fetal hypoxia by fetal ECG-ST analysis, treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding, genetics of pre-eclampsia and infrared spectroscopic analysis of cervical smears.
He has a strong commitment to medical education and believes that excellence in training tomorrow's doctors should be at the heart of what a medical school does. He was the Course Co-ordinator for Obstetrics and Gynaecology for Nottingham University from 1997 to 2004. During that time he helped to develop programmes of inter-professional learning, primary care based learning, distance learning and overseas study. He was closely involved in the setting up of a new Graduate Entry Medical programme, based at Derby where he developed the admissions procedure based on the one pioneered by Newcastle. As well as undergraduate teaching he has also taught on masters courses in oncology and assisted reproduction, introduced a graduate training programme for research students and devised a training Fellowship for obstetricians wishing to specialise in medical education.. He has edited or co-authored 3 undergraduate textbooks on obstetrics and gynaecology and has a masters degree in clinical education.
